Unlike many reporting apps that get cluttered with fake or unverified news, SafeNaija focused on credibility, clarity, and speed, ensuring that every alert felt trustworthy and actionable. From notifying emergency services at a tap to sharing location updates with loved ones, the app was built to empower citizens in moments when clarity and time mattered most.
Navigating Complexity
Designing SafeNaija came with high-stakes challenges. The biggest was building trust without overwhelming users. With two competing needs, fast, simple reporting and detailed, credible information every screen had to balance usability with depth.
Another hurdle was ensuring reliability on mobile, where limited space made real-time alerts, safety check-ins, and live location sharing tricky. The design had to keep cognitive load to a minimum while still empowering users in urgent, stressful moments.
Safety by Design
The design direction focused on speed, trust, and clarity. We created a clean, mobile-first interface with quick-tap reporting, guided steps for credibility, and trust-building elements like verified badges and location-backed updates. A consistent design system tied everything together, keeping the experience reliable in moments where every second counts.
Refining for Safety
User testing showed users sometimes felt unsure if their reports were sent, so we added instant confirmations with subtle animations to build trust. We also streamlined the safety check-in by reducing steps and moving critical actions upfront, making the flow faster and more intuitive.
Lessons in Safety
Designing SafeNaija showed me how powerful small design choices can be in stressful situations. Instant feedback built user trust, and simplifying steps reduced friction when it mattered most. If I revisit the project, I’d focus on deeper personalization, but the biggest takeaway was clear: thoughtful design can directly shape how safe people feel.
